Overall, concrete is ideal for homeowners looking for a long-lasting, low-maintenance surface with customization options, though it comes with a higher upfront cost and longer installation time. Asphalt is more cost-effective and quicker to install, making it a popular choice for larger areas like driveways and roads, though it requires more frequent maintenance and has a shorter lifespan.
Longevity – Concrete lasts longer, often 30 + years while asphalt typically lasts 15-20 years.
Appearance – A uniform black color is the choice for asphalt, while concrete can be stained and stamped into various patterns and finishes.
Cost – Concrete generally costs more than asphalt.
Install Time – Asphalt can be installed in a day or two, while concrete can take a couple more days including curing time, of course this depends on the project.
Maintenance – Expect to seal concrete every 5 years and asphalt every 2-3 years.
Weather Impact – Heat is something both surfaces deal with in the Hill Country. Concrete reflects more sunlight and is resistant to high temperatures and UV rays, while asphalt absorbs the heat and can soften and crack in the high heat.
Repairs – If cracks occur, asphalt is much easier and cheaper to repair and resurface than concrete.
